Tencent has opened its first data centre in Indonesia
Tencent Cloud, the cloud business of Tencent, today announced the launch of its first Internet Data Centre (IDC) in Indonesia, further emphasizing its commitment to addressing the ever-growing business needs in Indonesia and Asia. Deploying its industry-leading cloud offerings across the region, Tencent Cloud further strengthens its global footprint through the significant launch of the new IDC – the latest addition to its growing infrastructure network that now spans across 27 region and 61 availability zones.
With the data centre, Tencent Cloud's infrastructure network now spans across 27 regions and 61 availability zones.
Poshu Yeung, senior vice-president of Tencent Cloud International, said many local companies have realised the importance of going digital after being impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Located in Jakarta's central business district, the data centre boasts two utility power lines and 2N redundant transformers as well as N+1 redundant diesel generator with capacity to support up to 72 hours at full load. Tencent's cloud coverage currently encompasses 27 regions and 61 availability zones, most of which are located in China and the Asia-Pacific, and includes markets such as Singapore, Tokyo, Mumbai, Seoul, Moscow, Toronto, and Frankfurt.
Tencent has provided technological support for livestreaming events of Singapore e-commerce platform Shopee. The daily viewing time of Shopee's live site increased more than 15-fold over the past year.
By building its own data centers, Tencent also is looking to accelerate the overseas expansion of the other services under the group, including music app Joox and video-streaming platform WeTV in emerging Asian markets.
Lesley Simpson, Country Manager, WeTV Indonesia, said, "WeTV's commitment to consistently bring only the best to fans of Asian entertainment makes us inseparable from the support provided by Tencent Cloud. We are excited to reap the benefits of the new IDC in Indonesia, which will further enhance and improve the already reliable and high-quality service of Tencent Cloud, allowing us to create an even more unrivalled viewing experience for our users."
Over the last five months, Tencent Cloud announced the launch of a second data centre in South Korea, and a data centre hub for the Middle East and North Africa in Bahrain, which will go live by end-2021. It plans to launch second data centres in Indonesia, Thailand, Japan and Frankfurt this year. In Indonesia, it will be the company's first time launching two data centres in the same market in the same year.
Yeung revealed that Tencent would soon launch a second data centre in Thailand as well as in Japan in June.
Apart from supporting its own business and local enterprise customers, its data centre buildout across the region would tap growth potential from Chinese enterprises looking to expand overseas as well as international companies investing in the local markets.
