Old School RuneScape Gold RuneScape the famous browser-based massively multiplayer game has just turned 20. To celebrate developers Jagex are now moving both versions of the game to Steam.
This will be the first time the original RuneScape has appeared on Steam 20 years after its initial launch in 2001. For the longest time you were only able to play the game via Jagex's website but now it'll be available via Steam. It's all part of the developer's plan to "bring the RuneScape universe to more players globally." Bringing the game to another platform will likely engender some additional players as well.
According to RuneScape executive producer Mod Warden future changes will include "improving the early game experience, onboarding and readability" as well as optimising the UI "from refining text content interaction and hitbox sizes to engine improvements and stability that support flexibility across the widest array of possible display sizes." Some of that's about preparing for the launch of RuneScape's mobile version next year but the updates are intended to improve things on both platforms.
While RuneScape is much less high-tech than a big budget MMOs the game has picked up a loyal playerbase over 20 years and still has a thriving community. In June developers reported the game had its highest ever number of daily active players. Jagex plans to use the Steam community hub for further feedback development and community support. Players will be able to purchase “membership packages” for their account with cosmetic goods.
