EA Sports FIFA World shares more of a resemblance to the Xbox 360 and PS3 editions
While not as graphically intense as the Xbox One and PS4 versions of FIFA 14, EA Sports FIFA World shares more of a resemblance to the Xbox 360 and PS3 editions. The Player Impact Engine allows for real-life reactions between players, while Pro Player Intelligence takes into account actual weaknesses and strengths, with teams reacting accordingly. You can also expect Precision Dribbling and Tactical Defending for enhanced tactics on the pitch. How this game will impact FIFA 15 remains to be seen, but for now, you’re about to take one giant step closer to enjoying FIFA from almost anywhere in the world.
FIFA World is a free online version of EA’s popular football simulator. You can create your own club, sign players to your team, and compete in online tournaments to prove you're a football pro. In FIFA World, you must create your own virtual team and run it. As you play either online or against the "machine", you'll earn experience rewards and coins, both needed to sign up new players. It's basically a game that has been developed in the image and likeness of the FIFA Ultimate Team mode, although simplified. In addition to this mode, with FIFA World you can also lead your squad in Online Seasons. As in the traditional version of FIFA, you’ll start in the last league table (tenth), and you’ll have to beat your opponents to reach the top. The difficulty of each opponent gradually increases as you climb the league tables, of course.
Whether you think that monetization scheme sounds like a cash-grab or not will ultimately come down to personal preference, and will probably also decide whether you like FIFA World or not. In many ways, it’s a tad depressing to see that FIFA’s closest competition at the moment is simply another FIFA game, but after chatting with the developers it’s clear that there’s a bit of a rivalry going on. FIFA World may not be the conventional football experience that we’ve become accustomed to, but it could very well be a sign of things to come. Failing that, it could prove to be a profitable side-track for EA and a neat new experience for both series fans and new players alike.
The system requirements are reasonably low. I've been playing it on my work PC, which is a shonky old Dell with a cheap GeForce thrown into it. Curious about the origins of FIFA World, I asked EA Sports and was told that the game "harvested technology and features, including the Player Impact Engine, from across the FIFA franchise to create an optimal experience. It utilises HD console gameplay, designed specifically for FIFA World, with controls and gameplay that are unique to this game." You can also use coins or FIFA Points to retry a key encounter in League Teams, although the standard of play isn't especially high so you probably won't need to do so.
Although FIFA 15 is available on PC, EA Sports wants the annual football franchise in as many homes and offices as possible. Enter FIFA World, a free-to-play PC game that borrows popular features from last year’s smash hit. Here’s the best part. The FIFA World beta is ready for you to download and play.
