Almost all the greenskins addresses or insults to orcs have been removed from World of Warcraft
Blizzard continues to change content
World of Warcraft by making the game less offensive to the audience. Almost all the greenskins’ addresses or insults to orcs have been removed from the game. The resource WoWHead has a theory that explains the disappearance of the popular word – Games Workshop has begun to claim its rights to the word Greenskin.
The term greenskins is often used by human NPCs or members of the Alliance in reference to the game's orcs. While most instances of the phrase have been removed or altered, there is still one NPC named Captain Greenskin, as well as two legendary items, that use the phrase.
Other sources, such as Wowhead, have also pointed out that the removal of the term might be to avoid potential conflict with the Warhammer series. Warhammer features a race of orcs and goblins called Greenskins and, with Games Workshop's tendancy to trademark certain terms, Blizzard might be trying to cover themselves in the long run.
Last but not least, there have been several changes made to the game's dialogue, in order to remove suggestive content, or content that implies a lack of consent between characters. A sequence with the character Gerard Abernathy and his "mindslave" Theresa has been toned down. All of these changes to World of Warcraft come as a direct result of the accusations of racism, sexism, and "frat boy culture" at Activision Blizzard that have been made public over the last few months. Following those allegations, the publisher promised to make changes at the company, and pursue changes to its games to make them more inclusive.
Also in the game, the character Ice Venturon will be renamed, which refers to the legendary Ace Ventura. The fact is that trans people are offended by the fact that the movie “Ace Ventura: Pet Tracking” makes fun of a male character posing as a woman. Now the gnome will be named Shustrix Peak, and the items associated with it will be renamed.
It's just the latest rounds of changes that have come or will be coming to Blizzard's long-running MMO. The Public Test Realm build of the upcoming patch 9.1.5 has revealed the renaming of old achievements, the removal of crude emotes, and more will be coming to WoW in the weeks ahead once the patch goes live, along with a whole host of player-requested changes.
In the recent 9.1.5 development update, the WoW team said: "in a game that has thousands of art elements and a word count in the millions, we recognize that these updates will amount to very few total changes overall. Nonetheless, we believe these changes are worthwhile. World of Warcraft is meant to evolve over time, and every day, new players from every walk of life and every corner of the world experience our in-game content for the very first time. As a team, we want the world they see to stand as an expression of our talents and principles."
